When the onboarding ‘honeymoon’ ends?

Apr 11, 2023

One of the happiest moments. When you 'shake hands', and you hear the words: ‘You’re hired’. Getting up in the morning feels easy. You feel the energy flow. The window of opportunity is open, and your mind starts to wonder to all those ‘happy places’, where you see yourself ‘fulfilling the dreams’, and showing everyone ‘how valuable team member you are’. The world makes sense. And, even if you feel little bit of the ‘anticipation anxiety’, it’s still a happy place.

Next thing you know it, your team is welcoming you. You’re getting all those ‘positive messages’. And everything you hear is presented with enthusiasm. ‘We are doing great things in...we are planing to...you’ll have the opportunity to...'

But also, here and there, you hear the ‘noise’ of the reality, like when some of the company veterans is trying to ‘give you the heads up’ about what awaits you. But, for you. That’s just a weird sound. You happily manage to shut down.

Eventually, you do realise ‘the honeymoon is over’. The reality starts to creep in. Those team mates, that were smiling. Not all of them was really happy. Some, are actually quite disappointed you're here. And, some. They’ve been miserable for awhile.

  • The things you were promised to get. It’s not happening. There is a lack of resources. At the moment. So, you’re gonna have to wait for few weeks.
  • Oh, that too. There is this 'cost saving’ thing circling around. Hence, ‘the lack of stuff’ too. So, maybe, ‘We’re gonna have to stretch your job tasks list a little bit. But, don’t worry, you’ll get compensated’’. No. No one saying it really. You just get extra work. With the same salary.
  • The initial clarity about your tasks, or even role is starting to shrink. And, it's in direct proportion with the usage of technical jargon on the meetings; or with your realisation: Not everything seams to be properly organised around here.
  • Clients are not always happy. 'We don’t deliver everything on time'.
  • Things are also changing every day.
  • Some people are chronically killing your mood. And, the complaint waste they leave around. In time, it starts to stick a little bit.

Welcome to 'The Company'. Or these days, to ‘The family'. The place where things are less then perfect. ‘Family members’ are not so fun to be with. Things need to be cleaned on a regular basis. There are many repetitive, boring tasks, for you to do.

Your boss ’The Man' or 'The Lady' of the house, is not always in a good mood. Not always caring about ’how you feel’, or ‘what you need’. And, where every now and then, problems are kept under the carpet. Because, no one really wants to deal with them.

But, is it all bad? Is it so bad, that we need to accept the reality of the work/life?

No, it’s not. The exact opposite. The opportunity to grow; and develop; build character; skills; stretch your limits; is born in this exact place.

Because when you go to the honeymoon, do you really stay inside of the beautiful hotel all the time? Or eventually, you start ti feel this urge to ‘get some dirt’ on your feet, and you start to explore the surroundings. It’s just in the nature of the humans. To ‘find the way’ and ‘conquer the obstacles’.

When the honeymoon is over, the adventure starts.
