Crushing Goals: From Dreaming to Doing, Let's Get Real and Make It Happen!
Jul 12, 2023Hey, got goals you want to achieve?
Of course, you do! We all do! Whether it's aiming for that dream career move or bringing that killer business idea to life, or even just being more assertive at work, we're all about reaching those milestones.
Goal setting is everywhere these days, right? We can't help but imagine the future and how awesome we'll feel when we achieve it. But hold up, developing a strategy to make those goals a reality? That's where things get a little rocky.
Here's the deal: the road to success may not always be smooth, even if the goal itself seems shiny and exciting. It's not just about envisioning what you want, but also considering what you're willing to sacrifice and endure to get there. Trust me, it's a crucial piece of the puzzle.
Let's be real for a sec. Remember that time you set a goal to run three times a week? Monday rolled around, you were too tired. Wednesday, your buddy swung by for coffee. And Friday? Hey, it's relaxation time, not workout time! So, you decided to start fresh next Monday. But we all know how that story goes... too many Mondays wasted, right?
It's not just about setting goals; it's about tackling the obstacles head-on and strategizing like a boss. Goals are great for pointing us in the right direction, but it's the system we create that ensures we actually make progress.
So, how do we build that system?
- Step one: pick a goal you can realistically achieve.
Psychology tells us about this thing called "goal competition." Yeah, those other goals you have are competing for your attention. They can be major roadblocks. So, the solution is to choose one goal at a time. Focus is the name of the game.
- Once you've chosen your goal, it's time for some "implementation intentions."
Fancy term, right? It's all about making plans for your future behaviors. Get specific about when, where, and how you'll take action to get closer to that goal. For example, "Next week, I'll be running 20 minutes on [DAY] at [TIME] in [PLACE]." The more specific, the better your chances of actually doing it!
Oh, and do you have a measurement stick? No, not for cooking, but for measuring your progress. You see as humans we have this need for feedback. It boosts motivation, keeps us on track, and sheds light on what's working and what needs tweaking.
But, forget measuring just results; focus on progress. Are you showing up and putting time into what truly matters to you? Keep track of your numbers and how you feel. For instance, "When I hit my 20-minute running goal each day, stress magically disappears!"
- Last but not least, appreciate every step of the journey, the good and the bad.
Celebrate victories, big or small, and take a moment to reflect on what went well and what you can improve next time. No dwelling on the past, and no playing small when it comes to your success. You rocked that 20 minutes last week? Awesome! Now, let's amp it up to 25 minutes next week!
Goals, big or small, play a huge role in our lives. But just setting them isn't enough. We need a strategy, focus, and tracking to make them happen.
